Watershed Planning

Watershed plans are integrated strategies for the management of water resource quality and quantity within a watershed. Effective watershed planning requires an understanding of how much water is in the system, where it comes from, and how it is used, as well as the participation of all stakeholders to identify issues and implement solutions.

AAE is experienced in providing watershed planning solutions for small and large scale projects. Full scale, highly detailed topographical surveys as well as complete drainage, culvert and ditch inventories provide baseline data. We provide solutions in the form of high-quality mapping and planning with professional recommendations and cost estimates from our expert staff and partners, including engineers, hydrologists and other specialists. Several First Nations communities, including Skownan First Nation and Pine Creek First Nation, have contracted AAE Tech Services for watershed planning projects.

 

Watershed Inventories

Watershed inventories are comprehensive studies designed to gather information on riparian habitat and aquatic habitat conditions and to describe the biota (fish, invertebrates, wildlife)  within a particular watershed.  Aquatic surveys include documenting physical characteristics and hydrology (i.e., flow, channel morphology, channel sinuosity); water quality/chemistry; and habitat diversity (i.e., substrate, cover, depth).  A riparian habitat inventory includes identifying flora along waterways, describing bank stability, measuring slope, and identify riparian zone degradation.  All information gathered within a watershed inventory assist regulators and managers to develop integrated watershed management plans, facilitate rehabilitation where needed, help to encourage and develop sustainable practices around the watershed and enhance or protect aquatic and terrestrial environments. 

 

Representative Projects

 

Pine Creek First Nation Hydraulic Assessment

AAE was hired to conduct a hydraulic assessment of Pine Creek First Nation, Manitoba, in order to identify drainage problems and sources of flooding on reserve. Surveying was conducted that established elevations of existing water levels, infrastructure and high water marks, and was analyzed to provide recommendations for flood mitigation actions to be taken by the band and council.

 

Skownan First Nation Flood Management Survey

AAE completed a flood management survey of the Skownan Reserve. The study was initiated to obtain baseline data and to assess the existing infrastructure and drainage within Skownan Reserve. The results facilitated a complete hydrologic-hydraulic assessment in Phase II of the project and development of recommendations to reduce the impact of flooding on the reserve.

 

Swan Creek Watershed Riparian and Aquatic Assessment

AAE Tech Services was contracted by the West Interlake Watershed Conservation District to conduct an aquatic and riparian habitat assessment and document fish utilization of the creeks found within the Swan Creek Watershed. The goal of the assessment was to provide baseline data and to prioritize a list of recommendations to improve water quality and habitat conditions for fish and wildlife within the watershed.

 

Dog Lake Watershed Riparian and Aquatic Assessment

The Dog Lake Watershed assessment included documenting aquatic and riparian conditions found along the waterways and lakes found within.  A fish habitat inventory was conducted within the watershed, aerial surveys were completed to assess riparian health and water quality was assessed at numerous locations around the watershed.  Recommendations were to be used to help improve environmental conditions found within the watershed.

 

Lake Francis Watershed Riparian and Aquatic Assessment

The Lake Francis Watershed assessment included documenting aquatic and riparian conditions found along the waterways and lakes found within.  A fish habitat inventory was conducted, aerial surveys were completed to assess riparian health and water quality was assessed at numerous locations around the watershed.  Recommendations were to be used to help improve environmental conditions found within the watershed and enhance fish habitat, water quality and the overall health of the watershed.
