Hydraulic Assessments

AAE Tech Services has conducted numerous large and small scale hydraulic assessments and is experienced in working with various communities and projects across Manitoba and Ontario. Hydraulic assessments include stream-bed profiling, substrate analysis, velocity determination and surveys of drainage patterns, allowing for calculations of discharges and flow rates. Stream discharge and flow are both vital components for assessing flood risk and determining demands placed on infrastructure such as culverts. Furthermore, knowledge of drainage patterns aids in making informed management decisions regarding future building plans and specifications.

Representative Studies

Pine Creek First Nation Topographic Survey and Hydraulic Assessment

AAE conducted a topographic survey of the lakefront region of the Pine Creek First Nation Reserve in order to identify drainage problems and sources of flooding on reserve. Data was incorporated into a hydrological model of the Pine Creek area for use in a flood analysis, prevention and mitigation plan. Surveying was conducted that established elevations of existing water levels, infrastructure and high water marks, and was analyzed to provide recommendations for flood mitigation actions to be taken by the band and council.

St. Malo Fisheries and Aquatic Habitat Assessment

AAE was hired to conduct a fisheries assessment in the Rat River and St. Malo Lake ecosystems in order to provide recommendations to improve fish habitat and the health of the overall fishery. A vital component to this was conducting a hydraulic assessment of both upstream and downstream reaches of the Rat River. The stream bed was profiled and velocity readings were taken at multiple sites both upstream and downstream of St. Malo Lake, which were then used to calculate river discharge and flow. This facilitates comparison between the fisheries habitat in both sections of the river, and leads to making informed management decisions regarding fish stocking and spawning enhancement projects.
